How did I chose my topic?
I chose the Newsboy Strike of 1899 because I was really interested in the broadway play. The play was recommended to me, and when I saw it, I wanted to know if this topic was a real thing that happened. Once I found out that it was true, I wanted to know everything I could about it, whether the production of this event was accurate or not. I needed to know more.
How did I conduct my research?
I first started out looking for website. It was almost impossible to find anything. All of the websites said the same thing, a short description of what happened, and maybe a picture or two. I wanted to get the depth of this strike. What were the causes? What were the effects? I resorted to looking up my take on this topic, how it affected child labor laws. While researching the history of child labor laws and different events in history that enforced them, I decided to contact the Washington D.C. museum of newspapers, or the Newseum. It took about a day or so for them to contact me back, and I got really good newspaper articles from the time of the strike. From there, I could see what went wrong in this point in history by analyzing the text, and seeing if there was any sort of pattern or other relevant article during this time period.
Why did I choose my category and create my project?
I chose to do a website because I love designing things. It felt cool to create a color scheme and make different pages to show different things. I thought it might look nice to make a website that looked similar to an aged newspaper, so I made the background a creme color. I tried to make the layout simple to understand, so I categorized my topics into separate website pages. I also made different headers for the similar topics on the web pages to further classify my website so that it’s user-friendly.
How does my project relate to the NHD theme?
The Newsboy Strike of 1899 relates to the NHD theme because the Newsboys took a stand against the newspapers. They stood up for themselves when their lives were barely livable. When they needed their voices to be heard, the newsboys prevented any of the newspapers to be sold by staging rallies, strikes, and boycotts, which all are examples of taking a stand.
